Find Something to Smile About
A few years back, I had a manager for a short time who was dealing with some personal issues. One of the few conversations I had with him he said "it is what you make of it".
Everyone, I'm sure, has heard those words or close to them at some point. What has stuck with me for so long of him saying these words is that less than a month after he said this to me he lost his job and his family life.
But he prevailed.
He moved on to another job, a new location and eventually a new wife and he has done quite well for himself.
It is what you make of it.
The Great Ferris Bueller said "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
With those two philosophies (and many others) in mind, I decided to embark upon a list of things that make me smile. Why?
I truly feel that as of this moment I am on the brink of a nervous breakdown. Things are not going even remotely to plan and I am a flexible person. The current set of circumstances have me feeling pretty out of control and in a hate-hate relationship with life.
I need positive, joy and fun. This list of things fits that bill.

My grandparents both passed well over a decade ago. I hadn't seen them since I was a toddler but I always felt close to them.
Since I was little my grandfather seemed like a cardinal to me and my grandmother a bluejay. I have no idea why.
I believe that those you have lost can show themselves to you. That being said, when I see a cardinal I get the overwhelming feeling that my grandpa is close by. Same for my grandma when I see a bluejay, but it doesn't happen as often. What brings me to tears of joy is when I really need to see them and they appear or when I see them together which happens more often than you would think.
It doesn't seem to matter where I am in the country. I will at some point see these two birds.
The best story I have is when I went to see the hospital where I was born this past April. I was across the street from the maternity ward taking a picture when a cardinal landed about four feet from me on the sidewalk. I said "hi Grandpa" and the bird cheeped back at me. I turned to leave figuring this bird would fly away as I moved toward him, but he didn't. I moved slowly back toward the corner where I would turn toward the car and this little bird hopped along side me in the grass beside the sidewalk. As I turned the corner I looked toward the bird and said "bye Grandpa" and the little bird flew away.

When my son was a baby, this song came out. We used to sing it to him, but change the lyrics to fit whatever infant issue we were dealing with at the time. From swinging in his swing to changing diapers, we made the song fit.
When I hear it now, I remember some of the lyrics we made up but mostly it's just a catchy song.

I
Roman numerals.
Yep, Roman numerals give me a little thrill.
I love when books use them for chapter numbers. I love using them when writing a paper or numbering whatever I need to number. I prefer them on a watch, elevator buttons, and in movie titles. I love that no one else seems to know what they are.
It's like a secret little code except, on the rare occasion I find someone who can figure out what Superbowl it is without looking it up, I love that, too.
Except I never know what Superbowl it is because I don't follow baseball.
